    Bill Bonner pursued cause marketing as a brand awareness and engagement strategy. Customer research highlighted “education” as the expected area for OfficeMax cause marketing efforts, thus “A Day Made Better” was created for OfficeMax.

    Results

    • 98% of OfficeMax associates surveyed said the event “made them proud to work for OfficeMax”
    • National/local print, social and broadcast outlets covered or reported the events
    • Donations to Adopt-A-Classroom were on the rise
    •  1,000 teachers were recognized in front of their classrooms, their administrators and their communities

    Elf-Yourself, an interactive fun web application

    Description

    ElfYourself launched in Fall 2006 and quickly became an online consumer favorite for the holidays. Propelled by media relations, publicity events and viral video production, online consumer engagement raged and more than 100 million visitors created their own Elf-message.  Through negotiated sponsor relations with Macy’s, ElfYourself was brought to the physical world with a unique float in the 2010 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.  Now a holiday tradition for many homes, ElfYourself is in the top 5 most successful social media entertainment sites.

    OfficeMax Project Highlights

    This video shows the 2010 accomplishments of the OfficeMax External Relations team. As Senior Director, External Relations, I now use this video to showcase the accomplishments and results from that one year.
    Note: The “Minute To Win It” segment was not the work of the OfficeMax External Relations team. This was the result of work done by The Escape Pod, a fantastic Chicago agency that created wonderful work for OfficeMax.

    Description

    I pursued cause marketing as a brand awareness and engagement strategy. Customer research highlighted education as the expected area for OfficeMax cause marketing efforts.

    Learning that teachers spend $4 billion of their own money on classroom supplies – materials that OfficeMax sells – drove the focus. In October, 2007, the first “A Day Made Better” – a single day of 1,000 school-based events all across the country – was launched. The results were astounding. 98% of OfficeMax associates surveyed said the event “made them proud to work for OfficeMax”. National and local print, social and broadcast outlets covered or reported the events. Donations to Adopt-A-Classroom were on the rise. Best of all, 1,000 teachers were recognized in front of their classrooms, their administrators and their communities.

    The “A Day Made Better” program continues to thrive, expanding in reach to encompass Mexico, Canada and Australia and adding new ways for communities to engage and show their support for local teachers. The program has won multiple national awards and has been featured in Jason Saul’s book, “Social Innovation”.
